Dear Hotflashes,
I’ve noticed that a lot of older women lost their hair. Not with a bald spot the way men do, but it just gets thinner and thinner. There is more scalp showing than hair. This has happened to a lot of older women in my family. My grandmother wore a wig to cover it up. I can see that my mother is losing her hair too and I’m afraid I’m next. It’s depressing. Does anyone know if there is any way to prevent this?

It can be depressing. I see this in a lot of women usually if they are in their 70’s or 80’s. There are tv commercials for women’s rogaine, but i don’t know how good that really is or if it would work for everyone.
Maybe its the best thing just to make the most of it. I have one friend with this problem, she doesn’t try to hide it, keeps the hair cut really short and wears big earrings, always has great makeup and stylish clothes. She looks good and i don’t think many people are really focusing on her hair.
Maybe this is why hats are becoming more popular. Sigh.
I have read that hair loss can be from stress. If that is the cause then it may be only temporary.
